Middleweight Tarvis Simms Reunites With Star Boxing Tonight At Mohegan

By Boxing Press August 1st, 2009 All Press Releases

Tonight, undefeated middleweight contender, "Marvelous" Tarvis Simms (24-0-1, 11KO) will look to take one step closer to a world title opportunity, when he takes on Marcus Upshaw (11-3-1, 5KO) on the undercard of the Delvin Rodriguez vs. Isaac Hlatswhayo battle for the IBF vacant welterweight championship of the world.

The card is promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and is being held at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville, CT.

The fight will be a somewhat of a homecoming for Simms, but in more ways than just one. For starters, Simms will be fighting for just the third time in his home state of Connecticut as a professional. The Mohegan Sun in Uncasville is just a mere car ride away from Simms hometown of Norwalk and Simms expects to have a strong contingent of fans in attendance.

It will also mark the rebirth of Simms' relationship with promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing. Simms was formally promoted by DeGuardia before the two split back in 2005. Simms took some time away from the sport, but returned to the ring in early 2007 and has since added four more wins to his record during that time. Now the two are back together, and look to start up right where they left off.

"Tarvis was climbing up the ranks and headed towards a middleweight title shot, before the split," stated DeGuardia. "We are not looking in the past though, only to the future, and I feel that Tarvis still is one of the top middleweights in the world, and we expect him to show that to everyone in attendance on August 1st.

"A few more wins and we feel that Tarvis will be ready to take on any of the top contenders, or champions in his division, but first he has to take care of the business at hand on the 1st."

"I am excited to be back with Joe," stated Simms. "We are going to do things right I am confident in, that as long as I do my job, Joe will do his, and it's only a matter of time before I get my shot at one of these champions in the middleweight division. I want to thank Joe for giving me this opportunity to fight in front of my hometown fans, and promise everyone coming that they will not be disappointed in my performance on August 1st."
