Boxing In Central America: Saturday Night Results

By Alejandro Tostado August 9th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at Auditorio Benito Juarez in Zapopan, Mexico, teenage welterweight sensation Saul Alvarez, 28-0-1 (21), annexed the vacant WBC Youth title with a riveting performance.

Russian import Marat Khuzeev, 18-5-1 (7), found his long amateur experience to be of no value whatsoever against 19 year old Alvarez, who simply hit the gas in the second round to KO Khuzeev at 2:33 of the frame.

Alvarez, who has been boxing professionally since the age of 15, has now won 24 straight since a draw in 2006 and has stopped his last six opponents, capturing the NABF, WBA Fedecentro, WBO Latino and now the WBC Youth titles in the process.

On the undercard in Zapopan, super flyweight Juan Jose Montes, 14-1 (10), defeated Francisco Reyes, 4-10-2 (3), for the second time over the past year to retain the WBC Continental Americas crown via 12 round UD.

Heading down to Gimnasio Yuyin Luzcando in Panama City, Panama, light welter William Gonzalez, 22-5-1 (7), got up off the canvas in the third to stop previously undefeated Panamanian champion Loel Barrantes, 9-1 (7), in the seventh of a scheduled nine rounds.

26 year old Gonzalez had previously gone 1-3 over a very tough schedule during the last two years, dropping bouts to future world champion Andriy Kotelnik, Pavel Miranda and Alberto Mosquera.

With the win over Barrantes, Gonzalez picks up both the Panamanian and WBC Fedecentro belts.

Southpaw Joel Cerrud, 20-4-2 (15), was also floored in the third by a prospect as the ex-WBA Latino and Panamanian super feather titlist moved up to lightweight and had a close call with big punching Eric Castro, 7-2 (6), before winning the WBA Fedecaribe crown by majority decision.
