Shumenov Going For Light Heavyweight Boxing Title Record

By Boxing Press August 13th, 2009 All Press Releases

The WBA light heavyweight championship between defending titlist Gabriel Campillo and undefeated challenger Beibut Shumenov takes place this Saturday, August 15 at Daulet Sport Complex at the National Tennis Center in Astana, Kazakhstan.

In just his ninth pro bout, Shumenov could become the light heavyweight champion in the fewest fights, breaking Australian Jeff Harding's record of 15 contests.

Beibut Shumenov: “I’m not into saying too many words before a fight. I’ve prepared well and I’m very happy. I’m proud to be representing my country and fighting for the WBA world title. In this case, I want to thank Gabriel for taking the fight and giving me this opportunity. I also want to thank him for coming here to fight in my country.”

Chingis Shumenov (co-promoter): “We are very proud that we are organizing this WBA World title fight in Kazakhstan to showcase our beautiful country to the world. We just started our company in 2007 and now we are promoting a World title fight. We hope to make history with our event on Saturday.”

Gabriel Campillo: “I want to thank everyone for treating me so well in this country. I think Beibut is very smart fighter. I think it’s going to be a very interesting fight.”

Sampson Lewkowicz (Campillo’s promoter): “The WBA has fully sanctioned Saturday night’s fight between my champion, Gabriel Campillo, and a very tough challenger, Beibut Shumenov. Any claims regarding Campillo, other than Sampson Boxing being his exclusive promoter, are totally false. He will be fighting Shumenov this Saturday night and together we’re putting Kazakhstan on the boxing map.”

Gayrat Ahmedov: “When I started boxing professionally, I didn’t have a promoter until 2009, when I signed with KZ Event Productions. I’m very happy because they’re giving me an opportunity to fight for titles. They’re really looking out for us. I wish Beibut good luck.”
