August 27 “Fight Night Club” Boxing Lineup Solidified

By Boxing Press August 19th, 2009 All Press Releases

The third edition of the hit new monthly live boxing series "Fight Night Club" is rapidly approaching, and headliners Abner Mares and "Dangerous" David Rodela will be in tough in their co-featured bouts when they battle Carlos Fulgencio and Gamalier Rodriguez respectively at L.A. Live's Club Nokia in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 27th.

Mares vs. Fulgencio will be featured in the main event of the evening in an eight-round junior featherweight bout while Rodela vs. Rodriguez will be the co-featured six-round junior lightweight fight.

The pride of Montebello, California and a member of the 2004 Mexican Olympic team, Abner Mares (18-0, 11 KO's) is a budding star both in the United States and in Mexico (originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico).

Blessed with a full arsenal of weapons in the ring, the 23-year-old Mares won the NABO bantamweight title with a seventh round stoppage of former World Champion Isidro "Chino" Garcia of Guerrero, Mexico in September of 2007 and defended the crown twice with wins over Argentinean David Marchiano and Diosdado Gabi of the Philippines.

After an impressive victory over 15-1 Jonathan Arias in June of 2008, Mares stopped Jonathan Perez in six rounds this past May. On August 27th, he hopes to continue on his road to the top of the 118-pound division in front of his hometown fans.

Standing in his way will be hard-hitting Santo Domingo native Carlos Fulgencio (11-3-1, 7 KO's). A fierce competitor with six knockouts in three rounds or less to his name, Fulgencio is coming off a blistering first round knockout of Nelson Diaz in May.

A former United States amateur champion, Oxnard's "Dangerous" David Rodela (13-1-3, 6 KO's) is hitting his stride in the pro ranks with a series of big wins over the last two years, including victories over Jose Luis "Mapachito" Soto Karass, Julio Gamboa, Ramon Ayala and former World Champion Kevin "Flushing Flash" Kelley.

He continued his win streak in 2009 with a ten-round win over Marlon "Rata" Aguilar in January, followed by another victory against Juan Garcia on June 11 in the first installment of "Fight Night Club". On August 27th, Rodela hopes to continue his winning streak by notching another victory at Club Nokia.

In the opposite corner facing Rodela, will be 22-year-old Gamalier Rodriguez (8-1-2, 4 KO's). A native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez is currently riding a three-fight win streak that includes a second round knockout of Carlos Perez in his most recent bout in December.

"Fight Night Club," is Golden Boy Promotions' and AEG's critically acclaimed new live monthly boxing series, that presents boxing in a night club atmosphere, with a DJ, music, great food and a VIP room, as well as a unique setup where the ring is on Club Nokia's stage with standing room for fans in front of the ring, as well as reserved seating in the balcony.

After the boxing action ends, fans are invited to stay to hear great music played by LA's hottest DJ's, dance and mingle with the fighters as the venue converts back into a night club.

"Fight Night Club" is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and AEG and is sponsored by Quaker State, EA Sports' Fight Night Round 4, Vitamin Water and Budweiser.

The series will return to Club Nokia on September 24. Televised bouts will air live on Versus and will be streamed live on RingTV.com and Yahoo! Boxing beginning at 6:00pm PT/9:00pm ET. Doors open at 5:00pm PT and the first bell rings at 5:30pm PT.

Tickets, priced at $65 (Mezzanine VIP), $50 (Lower Mezzanine), $40 (Upper Mezzanine) and $28 (General Admission: Floor standing room), may be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 online at www.ticketmaster.com or thru any Ticketmaster outlet or the Staples Center box office. Group tickets and full series tickets at a discounted rate are also available by calling 1-877-AEG TICKETS (1-877-234-8425).
