Demetrius Andrade promised to put on a spectacular performance in front of his hometown fans on Friday night, and he did not disappoint.
Fighting in the co-feature bout of the evening at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, RI, the Providence native Andrade improved his record to (7-0, 6KO), completely dominated previously undefeated John Williams (3-1-1, 2KO) stopping him in the final round of their scheduled six round jr. middleweight contest.
The 2007 amateur world champion and 2008 U.S. Olympian Andrade, who is co-promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and Banner Promotions, is widely considered to be the top prospect in all of boxing and with performance like this, it would be hard to argue otherwise.
The undefeated Williams, who was a three-time golden gloves champion as an amateur, was supposed to be a test for the young 21-year-old Andrade, but right from the opening bell Andrade's blazing hand speed and concussive power were on display. Andrade scored with damaging combinations to both the body and head of Williams throughout the fight.
In the sixth and final round Andrade began to really pour it on. With Williams taking heavy punishment the referee called a halt to the contest. Official time of the stoppage was 2:33. It was yet another very impressive performance by the highly touted Andrade. Look for him to be back in action very soon.
The Demetrius Andrade vs. John Williams bout was promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and Banner Promotions, in association with Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment and Sports.
