Sometimes lightning does strike twice as WBO light flyweight champ Ivan Calderon had his rematch with Rodel Mayol at Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico end early for the same reason as their first pairing in June: a head clash.
One again Calderon was cut badly after a difficult test against the Filipino hard man but this time instead of the technical draw in June, the Guaynabo southpaw came away with a technical decision, winning two scorecards 68-65 while Mayol was awarded the third by the same margin.
Could a third clash between these two be on offer? Calderon has now seen his last three contests end early for the same reason.
Calderon retains the WBO belt for the fifth time and keeps an undefeated career mark of 33-0-1 (6), while Mayol drops to 25-4-1 (19).
Another WBO champ, super feather Roman "Rocky" Martinez, 22-0-1 (13), had a far less difficult night, battering challenger Feider Viloria, 22-5-1 (15), over the course of their bout before knocking the Colombian with one second remaining in the ninth.
Super flyweight Juan Mercedes, 24-2 (17), also celebrated an early win by stopping Robert DaLuz, 12-21-3 (9), in the sixth.
