Boxing In Mexico: Saturday Night Results

By Alejandro Tostado September 13th, 2009 All Boxing Results

The main event at El Palenque de la Feria in Tepic, Mexico featured a highly competitive WBO minimumweight title defense by Donnie Nietes.

The Filipino visitor was given all he could handle by Interim WBO titlist Manuel Vargas but after twelve difficult rounds were completed, wildly diverged scores were announced.

Vargas won one of the cards 116-112 while Nietes took the others 118-110 and 116-110 to win the split decision. Nietes improves to 25-1-3 (14), while Vargas goes to 26-4-1 (11).

Light middle Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 40-0-1 (30), annihilated American Jason LeHoullier, 21-2-1 (8), in the first round to keep the WBO Latino belt.

Southpaw bantam Z Gorres, 30-2-2 (17), defeated Cruz Carbajal, 29-17-2 (25), in the sixth at super bantam when Carbajal dislocated an arm and couldn't continue.

Interim WBO bantam strapholder Fernando Montiel, 39-2-2 (29), engaged in a wild non-title bout with Alejandro Valdez, 21-3-3 (15), for three rounds before the action was halted and declared a draw due to Montiel suffering a badly cut eyelid.

Ex-WBC lightweight champ Jose Luis Castillo, 60-9-1 (52), continues to gather steam at welter, stopping Carlos Urias, 41-21 (30), in the second.

The Arena in Monterrey saw former super flyweight world champ Cristian Mijares, 36-6-2 (15), in another failed bid at bantam, losing an Interim WBA title clash in a rematch against Nehomar Cermeno, 18-0 (10), via a 117-111 and 116-112, twice, unanimous decision.

On the undercard, undefeated American heavyweight David Rodriguez, 32-0 (30), knocked out Robert Davis, 32-11 (20), in the third.
