Boxing In Britain: Friday Night Results

It was a good Friday night at the fights all across Britain and we kick things off at historic York Hall in London’s Bethnal Green.

Light welters Lenny Daws and Barry Morrison tangled in a rematch for the vacant British title and Daws managed to reverse his 2007 loss to the Scot.

Last time out Morrison squeaked out a split decision to lift the British crown but this time Daws took it away from the judges and knocked out his rival at 1:30 of the tenth frame to capture the vacant domestic belt.

Daws wins his fifth bout on the bounce to go to 20-1-1 (8), while Morrison drops to 17-4-1 (7), suffering the first stoppage loss of his career.

On the undercard, ex-British super bantam champ Matthew Marsh, 12-1 (1), outboxed hot prospect Josh Wale, 8-2 (4), by a score of 97-94 over ten rounds but was unable to annex the vacant English strap by having not made weight the day before.

40 year old former European cruiserweight king Terry Dunstan, 21-3 (12), continued his comeback with a six round points verdict over Hungarian import Krisztian Jaksi, 5-11-4 (0).

Across town at the Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, cruiserweight prospect Tony Bellew, 10-0 (7), KO’d veteran journeyman Nick Okoth, 8-24-5 (3), in the third round.

Sharp boxing, multi-talented lightweight Steven Bell, 18-1-2 (5), outpointed tough southpaw Mickey Coveney, 9-6 (1), over six frames while super feather prospect Vinny Mitchell, 10-0 (2), did the same against tricky Daniel Thorpe, 23-86-3 (9).

At Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, one of Britain’s toughest fighters to win rounds against, Youssef Al Hamidi, 6-20-1 (1), got off the canvas to narrowly upset Steve Saville, 19-6 (8), by a score of 96-95 after ten rounds at lightweight.

Super feather Lyndsey Scragg, 10-1 (3), won her third in a row following a failed bid for the WBC Female belt last year by posting a 79-75 win over Angel McKenzie, 3-16 (0), after eight rounds of combat.

Promising super middleweight puncher Alex “Sledgehammer” Strutt, 3-0-1 (2), stopped Davey Jones, 9-21-2 (0),in the very first round to stay undefeated.

Headlining a show at the Dome in Doncaster was light welter Stefy Bull, 27-6-1 (6), who stopped Ali Wyatt, 4-13-2 (3), in the eighth frame of a scheduled ten rounder.
