Matchroom Boxing: Gammer Vows Revenge Against Williams

By Boxing Press September 24th, 2009 All Press Releases

Scott Gammer has vowed to get revenge on Danny Williams and then claim the Prizefighter Heavyweights III title.

Gammer, 32, lost his British Heavyweight Championship to Williams in 2007 and the pair are on a collision course to meet again on October 2.

If both men win their quarter-finals they will meet in the semi-finals of Barry Hearn’s latest eight-man, one-night tournament at the ExCel in London.

“It would be lovely to fight and beat Danny Williams,” admitted Gammer. “It’s nothing personal against Danny, he is a nice fellow, but the point is he beat me and took my title off of me.

“I’m training harder than ever for Prizefighter. Even when I was training for British title fights, I’ve not trained as hard as this and by the time October 2nd comes I will be in the best shape of my life.”

Gammer held the British belt for nearly nine months from June 2006 to March 2007 but his career has gone downhill since the Williams defeat.

Struggling for motivation, he has only won once since and he nearly quit boxing before Prizefighter gave him the opportunity to salvage his career.

“My heart was not in boxing and I wasn’t training for the fights,” added Gammer.

“I didn’t care if I won or lost and it showed in the fights. Motivation was the biggest problem – nothing was there - and it all fell apart as I wasn’t enjoying the training.

“I wasn’t the same man I had been in the last few years and you can’t fight without dedication and commitment.

“This is a make or break night in my career but the way I feel now I know it will be a ‘make’ day.

“Prizefighter is a big opportunity to get back on track and I will take that chance with both hands.

“This is exactly what I needed and, with the quality of opponents, I know I have to train really hard. Now I’ve stopped work and am training as hard as I can so it’s going to be brilliant.

“I think I have to prove a point to myself that I can still do it. I’m excited about Prizefighter and I’m going to win it.

“If I didn’t think I could win then I wouldn’t be in the competition.”

Gammer fights undefeated Irishman Coleman Barrett in the Prizefighter quarter-finals with a potential semi-final against current British Champion Williams or underdog Carl Baker.

Prizefighter Heavyweights III tickets cost £40 and £80 and are available from See Tickets on 0871 220 0260, www.seetickets.com or from Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900.
