Gooseen-Tutor Boxing Signs Charles Whittaker

By Boxing Press October 28th, 2009 All Press Releases

Light middleweight Charles "Killa" Whittaker of the Cayman Island has been signed to a promotional contract with Goossen Tutor.

“Dan Goossen has a proven history of getting fighters opportunities to show what they can do,” Whittaker acknowledged. “Over the years my agent Raul Alvarez and I have had trouble getting fights. By signing with Goossen Tutor, this takes a lot of weight off of Raul and me and now all I have to do is focus on training and fighting.”

Although 35 years old, Whittaker has been improving with age under the eye of trainer Norman Wilson. Since his last loss more than five years ago, the one-time student of Roy Jones, Jr., has rattled off a string of 10 consecutive wins – seven via knockout.

“I feel great at 35,” Whittaker, a 17-year pro who now calls Hollywood, Florida home, insists. “I feel like I’m 20. I live a clean life; I don’t drink or smoke. And signing on with a new promoter like Goossen Tutor is very exciting and I am looking forward to good things and a successful relationship.”

“The negotiations started right after the Cayman Islands show,” Alvarez revealed. “I kept in contact with Dan and Tom (Brown, Goossen Tutor matchmaker) and although we had offers from a few other promoters, we really liked the way Goossen Tutor creates opportunities for their fighters. Overall Charles and I felt real comfortable with them.

“But in the end,” Alvarez continued, “the reason we chose Goossen Tutor to promote Charles Whittaker is very simple: Dan Goossen is the top promoter in boxing and, with his knowledge he will guide us to a world title fight which is our main goal.”

In his career Whittaker has experienced triumph and disappointment against some top competition. In May, 2001 he took on former WBA Middleweight Champion Julio Cesar Green in New York and -- in the eyes of most including former world heavyweight champ and HBO commentator George Foreman – was victimized by a hometown decision of a draw. In September, 2002, Whittaker took on top-10 ranked junior middleweight Emmitt Linton in a bout which ended in a technical draw due to a cut on Linton’s head from an accidental head butt. His career highlights include winning the IBO Intercontinental, WBC CABOFE and NABO Junior Middleweight titles.

“Charles Whittaker is the epitome of a boxer determined to overcome any and all obstacles and is a welcome addition to the Goossen Tutor stable,” Goossen asserted. “We liked what we saw of him in the Cayman Islands and we tracked his progress up to now. He worked hard and got better with each fight. There are some bigger fights out there for Charles and we will have an announcement of his first bout under the Goossen Tutor Promotions banner shortly.”
