Boxing In Britain: Daws, Cook Draw For British Title In London

At London’s famed York Hall last night, Lenny Daws held onto his British light welter title by drawing with challenger Jason Cook after 12 hard fought rounds.

Cook was on fire in the early rounds, nailing Daws with big left hooks but the British champ gritted his way through the early rounds, soaking up the efforts of the former IBO and European lightweight kingpin.

By the middle rounds Welshman Cook started to show his 34 years and little ring experience since returning from a four year hiatus in December as the superbly conditioned Daws began to take over.

Cook had to use his greater experience to see things thru until the end of the 12th as Daws scored with a high work rate.

When the scores were read, one card had it dead even at 114-114 while each man was awarded a 115-114 margin.

Daws retains the British belt and goes to 20-1-2 (8) while Cook sees his record to 26-3-1 (13).

The undercard saw Grzegorz Proksa, 20-0 (13), capture the vacant European Union middleweight crown with a fifth round stoppage of Tynan Booth, 11-6-1 (2).

Steve Williams, 9-0 (3), annexed the vacant English light welter strap with a difficult ten round points verdict over Michael Grant, 12-2-1 (1).
