Boxing In Mexico: Big Saturday Night On Tap

It’s a massive eveing of boxing tonight south of the border with three quality fight cards in Mexico City, Acapulco and Merida.

We kick things off at the Poliforum Zamna in Merida where Elio Rojas defends his WBC featherweight belt against Guty Espadas Jr.

Rojas, 21-1 (13), outboxed Takahiro Aoh in Tokyo for the crown this past July and must do the same against the veteran Espadas, 45-7 (28), who held the WBC title in 2000.

The WBA light flyweight strap is at risk at the Discoteca El Alebrije in Acapulco as reigning champ Giovanni Segura, 22-1-1 (18), makes his second defense.

Facing the big punching Segura is former interim WBO minimumweight challenger Walter Tello, 14-3 (6).

A good scrap on the undercard sees ex-interim WBA lightweight challenger Urbano Antillon, 26-1 (19), meeting Luis Antonio Arceo, 22-9-2 (15), at light welter.

In Mexico City, the Auditorio Plaza Condensa sees hammer-fisted former WBO super bantam champ Daniel Ponce De Leon, 37-2 (31), square off with Orlando Cruz, 16-1-1 (7), for the vacant interim WBC Latino featherweight trophy.

The undercard features an intriguing contest between ex-WBA light welter king Vivian Harris, 29-3-1 (19), and undefeated KO artist Lucas Martin Mathysse, 25-0 (23), over ten rounds at welterweight.
