Boxing Result: Margarito Returns Victorious, Defeats Garcia In Mexico

After 16 months out of the ring, ex-WBO/WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito made his comeback to boxing a good one by pounding out a dominating unanimous decision win at light middleweight over Roberto Garcia last night at La Feria de San Marcos in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

If front of large festival audience, Margarito nearly gunned down his adversary at the start as Garcia hit the deck in the first frame but managed to beat the count and survive the round.

Garcia had never previously faced world class opposition and Margarito’s long experience at that level was apparent in every round of action as the former world champ’s edge in ability won countless exchanges.

But Garcia showed a big heart as the Texas resident never stopped coming, he just didn’t have the tools to derail Margarito’s comeback and losing points in the eighth and tenth rounds didn’t help matters.

After ten frames, Margarito, 38-6 (27), was awarded the decision, 100-88, 99-90 and 99-89, picking up the vacant 154 pound WBC International belt in the process.

Garcia suffer a loss for the first time in six years, falling to 28-3 (21).

The chief undercard attraction saw Interim WBA super feather titlist Jorge Solis, 39-2-2 (28), efficiently handle the challenge of southpaw Mario Santiago, 21-3-1 (14), over 12 rounds, posting a 119-109, 118-109 and 118-109 points win after Santiago lost a point in the ninth frame.

Solis could face the winner of the upcoming Takashi Uchiyama vs. Angel Granados WBA title bout, taking place on May 17 in Saitama, Japan.

Lightweight contender Urbano Antillon, 28-1 (20), won a WBA title eliminator by dropping Rene Gonzalez, 27-2-1 (21), twice on the way to winning a 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91 decision.

The victory should get Antillon a shot at the winner of the May 20 WBA title clash between Paulus Moses and Miguel Acosta taking place in Windhoek, Namibia.
