Boxing Result: Lazarte Dethrones IBF Champ Tamara In Argentina

Carlos Tamara’s reign as IBF junior flyweight champion proved to be of brief duration as the American based Colombian’s trip to the hometown of Luis Alberto Lazarte resulted in a split decision loss last night at Club Once Unidos in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.

Tamara came into the belt via a shocking upset of Brian Viloria in January, two years after failing to unseat WBO flyweight champion, and Argentine national hero, Omar Andres Narvaez, but could not carry the momentum into Mar Del Plata.

A full 12 years the senior of the 27 year old champion and the much shorter man Lazarte mounted his best performance in years to outwork Tamara via a 116-112, 115-113 and 113-115 split decision.

On his fifth try over three different weight classes, Lazarte, 47-9-1 (18), annexes a world title, becoming the IBF junior flyweight titlist and stopping the four bout win streak of Tamara, 21-5 (15).

Lazarte’s reign could shortly see the challenge of top rated contender and former longtime IBF champion Ulises Solis of Mexico, who won a title eliminator over Bert Batawang in March.
