Boxing In Australia: Mundine, Medley, Vea. Leapai Win Down Under

Two good fight cards took place in Oz earlier this week with some big names on the domestic scene in action along with a former world champion.

Ex-two time WBA super middle kingpin Anthony Mundine made it down to light middle this past Wednesday, headlining a show at Brisbane’s Entertainment Centre against experienced Argentine campaigner Carlos Adan Jerez.

Mundine had no problems against the steel-chinned South American, who despite being in way over his head class-wise found a way to survive the much bigger Aussie’s barrages.

The 35 year old Mundine was keeping busy and testing himself at the weight, where he could possibly challenge newly minted WBA titlist Miguel Cotto in the near future.

With the win, Mundine captures the WBA International light middle crown and improves to 39-3 (23) while Jerez drops to 30-13-3 (16).

On the undercard, ex-OPBF heavyweight titlist Alex Leapai, 19-3-3 (15), had to climb off the canvas in the third to halt American visitor Travis Walker, 34-5-1 (28), in the fourth.

Leapai is scheduled for his biggest bout to date in August when he meets former world title challenger Owen Beck.

On Thursday at the Panthers Rugby League Club in the Sydney suburb of Penrith, cruiserweight Dominic Vea, 13-2 (10), was pushed hard during a majority decision over 39 year old Kiwi southpaw Oscar Siale, 12-5 (4).

As a result, the Blacktown resident annexes the vacant Commonwealth crown and could be in line for a defense against former beltholder and Canadian lefty Troy Ross, who just lost an IBF title clash to Steve Cunningham.

Light middle contender Robert Medley, 29-3 (19), was also on the bill, stopping southpaw and ex-Aussie titlist Gary Comer, 20-10-1 (7), in the fifth.
