Fresh from his self-imposed retirement and third-time championship crowning, WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz will have to try and overcome the biggest physical obstacle currently in boxing today in his next mandatory defense: Russian giant Nicolai Valuev. Valuev took out former contender Clifford Etienne in three rounds very recently and is often spoken of in heavyweight circles, if not for his ability and undefeated record, then plainly for his sheer physical size (Valuev is seven-feet-tall and weighs around 300-pounds). Ruiz was beaten in his last title defense by James Toney who was subsequently stripped for testing positive for steroids.
We hope to bring you an official announcement of this mandatory fight taking place very soon.
