It is rumored that in the wake of the Javier Castillejo-Fernando Vargas-WBC mix-up, Castillejo's former title will be contested by former welterweight world champion Ricardo Mayorga and unheralded Italian Michele Piccirillo. No official word is available but the assignment would seem a curious one being that Mayorga's last fight was an eighth round stoppage loss to now retired middleweight Felix Trinidad. Piccirillo, a former IBF welterweight titlist with a win over former undisputed champion Cory Spinks, has two losses to his name, a revenge loss inflicted by Spinks and a European level decision loss; he has never been stopped in his career. Piccirillo has not fought anyone of note in the light middleweight division and felt the canvas in his last bout en route to a sixth round majority decision win.
We will keep you updated and hope to confirm this fight soon.
