Boxing In Panama: Concepcion vs. Marquez For WBA Flyweight Crown Tonight

There’s a good fight card this evening at Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City as local hero Luis Concepcion looks to up his Interim WBA super fly title status to full blown WBA champion as he meets opponent Hernan Marquez over 12 scheduled rounds.

Concepcion has won 19 straight bouts, picking up regional titles along the way before capturing the Interim WBA bauble with a dramatic final round stoppage against Omar Salado in 2009. The 25 year old from Panama City has retained three times since then, all by stoppage.

But “El Nica”, 22-1 (17), could have his hands full this evening as 22 year old southpaw Marquez brings a good deal of experience to the table.

Nicknamed “Tyson”, Marquez, 29-2 (22), has good finishing skills and in the two losses on his resume, faced very good opposition in the form of Nonito Donaire and Ritchie Mepranum.

Marquez lost a close ten rounder to Mepranum but had to climb off the canvas against Donaire before getting stopped in the eighth in a clash for the vacant Interim WBA super fly title.

Given the high KO ration posted by the two combatants, this should be a real firefight for as long as it lasts.

40 year old southpaw Lisa Brown, 18-4-3 (5), is back in action on the undercard, defending her WBA Female super bantam crown against local challenger Chanttall Martinez, 12-4 (5), who came up short in an Interim WBC Female title clash last year against Jackie Nava.

Heavyweights are on the bill with Frenchman Johann Duhaupas, 25-1 (14), going up against chinny Bolivian banger Saul Farrah, 30-14-2 (24), for the WBA Fedebol and WBC Latino trophies.

One fight into a comeback following a five year layoff, former WBA super feather ruler Vicente “El Loco” Mosquera, 25-2-2 (13), goes all the way up to light middle to take on 40 year old puncher Gilberto Quiros, 19-14-1 (16), who usually fights as a light welter or welter.
