Unbeaten junior welterweight sensation Dmitriy “Star of David” Salita (22-0, 13 KO’s) will speak to alumni of the birthright israel program in the gallery of the National Museum of American Jewish History where Sting Like a Maccabbee: The Golden Age of the American Jewish Boxer is on exhibit. Salita, 23, is a native of Odessa, Ukraine and a practicing Orthodox Jew. He fights out of Brooklyn, NY and is promoted by DiBella Entertainment. Recently Disney Pictures and producer Jerry Bruckheimer optioned Salita’s life story for the film Golden Boy. Scripted by Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans), it is based on Salita’s relationship with his trainer Jimmy O’Pharrow of the famed Starrett City Boxing Club.
About the Exhibition: Between 1910 and 1940 there were 27 Jewish world-boxing champions at a time when the sport was an integral part of American popular culture. Sting Like a Maccabee: The Golden Age of the American Jewish Boxer takes the gloves off on American Jewish contributions to the cultural, economic and athletic history of boxing.
