WBA super fly champion Hugo Fidel Cazares lived up to his nickname “El Incredible” last night at Plaza de Toros Eduardo Fontanet in Mazatlan, Mexico.
The 33 year old southpaw was fighting in his home state of Sinaloa for the first time in eight years and in Mexico for only the fourth time over his last 22 bouts.
Cazares had the task of handling the challenge of 24 year old Tijuana bomber Arturo Badillo, who had won three straight inside the distance after losing a WBC Fecarbox flyweight title clash a year ago to Ronald Barrera.
As expected, Badillo came out winging punches but could not rattle the composure of the champion, who controlled the first round with an educated jab.
In the second frame, Cazares began to mix in power lefts that shook the less experienced challenger, who was unable to land anything of significance on the champion.
Cazares dropped Badillo hard in the opening moments of the third with a perfect left hand but somehow the big-hearted challenger beat the count.
Shortly thereafter Badillo was floored again behind a firestorm of leather but the Tijuana man known as “Fuerte” refused to stay down.
Cazares ended matters with another booming left that had Badillo on the canvas for the final time.
Making his fourth defense, Cazares move to 35-6-2 (25), while Badillo drops to 20-2 (18).
