Doubt has overshadowed the possibility of Joe Calzaghe’s WBO/IBF super middleweight unification showdown with American Jeff Lacy four months before the proposed bout is to even take place. Calzaghe is rumored to be dissatisfied with his potential payment for the fight and is wrangling over the placement of the fight, stating that other events in his native Wales provide a conflict for the ideal setting and timing of the Lacy bout. this is not the first time that Calzaghe has had a big fight proposed only for it not to happen. Several times, Calzaghe proposed to fight Roy Jones, a fight that never materialized. Bernard Hopkins was another fighter Calzaghe apparently tried to tempt, with several million less than Hopkins eventually made fighting Oscar de la Hoya. Injuries have plagued Calzaghe but a definite step up to ligth heavyweight to face then IBF champion Glen Johnson also fell apart. Calzaghe returns to the ring on September 10 in defense of his WBO title against Evans Ashira. Many doubt that if successful against Ashira, Calzaghe will make good on his threats to face Lacy.
We will keep you updated as to the progress of negotiations between the Calzaghe and Lacy camps.
