Vic Darchinyan successfully defended his IBF and IBO flyweight titles tonight in Sydney with a predictable fifth round stoppage win over tough Colombian challenger Jair Jiminez. After a sluggish couple of opening rounds Darchinyan cranked up the pace in round three, stinging Jiminez repeatedly with straight left hands. After instructions from trainer Jeff Fenech to “finish him off’ before the bell for the fourth round, Darchinyan went up another gear and again had the challenger in all sorts of trouble. The fifth round began with more of the same, after a massive straight left hand had Jiminez staggering. Mercifully the referee called a halt to the bout midway through the round, much to the delight of the partisan Sydney crowd. With the victory Darchinyan moves to 24-0 (18KO’s) while Jiminez drops to 22-5-1 (16KO’s).
