Hennessy Looking to Big Things for Walker.

By Boxing Press September 2nd, 2005 All Press Releases

Promoter Mick Hennessy believes that David Walker could become one of the nation’s favourite boxers if he beats British light middleweight champion Jamie Moore on September 23rd at the GH Carnall Leisure Centre in Manchester. Two-time Southern Area champion “Kid Dynamite’ already enjoys a high profile. A series of sensational wins in 2002 and 2003 saw him heralded as Britain’s most exciting boxer and land a European title challenge against now IBF champion Roman Karmazin live on the BBC. Whilst he has been rebuilding quietly since suffering brave defeat in that contest, his following has remained. Now, once again, he has a Championship opportunity to take his popularity to another level.

"If David beats Jamie Moore there could be massive interest in him,” said Hennessy Sports head Mick Hennessy. If he wins, I believe he can become one of the biggest names in British boxing. Earlier in his career he was selling a huge number of tickets, (he sold out the Grand Hall at Alexandra Palace for his European title challenge), and headlined a live event on terrestrial TV. With a British title he could build on that and start to attract the more casual sports fan.”

Hennessy is rightly confident that the majority will be behind his man next month.

“I don’t think there is a neutral fan in the country that wouldn’t like to see David beat Jamie Moore,” he added. That’s no reflection on Moore - he is a warrior, a proven British champion and he is also very popular -but David is the type of boxer that everybody takes to their heart, and for good reason. Inside the ring he fights like a British Arturo Gatti. He gives it everything, every time. Anyone who saw him climb off the canvas against Spencer Fearon from a humdinger of a punch will know that. It was one of those shots where everything just came together. Very few top fighters would have recovered from it, but as Jack Dempsey once said: “a champion is someone who gets up when he can’t’. That just about summarises Dave. Outside of the ring he is the perfect gentleman. Quietly spoken, kind and considerate. You couldn’t meet a nicer person. It’s no surprise that the public warm to him so much.”
