Boxing Round by Round: Kassim Ouma versus Alfredo Cuevas

Ex-IBF Light Middleweight Champion Kassim Ouma, headlining Golden Boy Promotion’s card from the Borgata in Atlantic City, had earned his title belt the hard way. The native Ugandan southpaw now living and training in West Palm Beach, Florida had faced and defeated many other tough contenders on the way up such as Verno Phillips, Kofi Jantuah, JC Candelo, Angel Hernandez and others but lost the belt during his second defense to underrated European Champion Roman “Made in Hell” Karmazin back in July. This bout, broadcast live by HBO Latino, would be Ouma’s first time back in the ring since the loss and opponent Alfredo “Freddy” Cuevas was certainly not going to make life easy for the likeable Ouma. Cuevas had never been stopped by a punch despite having been in with the likes of Jermain Taylor Kingsley Ikeke and Michael Rask.

Round one:The round begins with Cuevas immediately throwing a left hook that Ouma deflects. Cuevas is circling the ring in the early going while Ouma is occasionally charging with his straight right. A minute into the round Ouma lands a straight right to the body followed by a stiff jab to Cuevas’ jaw, Cuevas counters with a clinch. Ouma is leading with his straight right, and Cuevas didn’t seem prepared for that, as Ouma is landing at will. Ouma lands it with a minute to go and Cuevas is hurt, he is stumbling around.&! nbsp; Ouma continues charging and Cuevas tries his best to clinch but he is out on his feet. Ouma lands another straight right but Cuevas manages to clinch and get his legs back. Ouma lands a straight right at the bell that downs Cuevas. Cuevas gets up but was hurt several times that round. Ouma dominated.

Round: Ouma 10-8 Fight: Ouma 10-8

Round two: Ouma comes back out, using his jab a little bit more this round. Its obvious that Cuevas’ defense is flawed, as Ouma is landing everything he throws, which, right now at least is just the jab and straight right. Ouma is fighting smart, not putting himself in danger by charging straight in going for the kill, but instead easing himself inside with a lunging jab. Cuevas can’t even defend the jab right now, and this round is turning out to be just as lopsided as the first. Cuevas hasn’t thrown any real punches up until thirty seconds left in the round, but nothing is landed for him and Ouma just keeps peppering him with the jab and straight right.

Round: Ouma 10-8 Fight: Ouma 20-16

Round three: Ouma keeps coming forward with the jab, and Cuevas is actually punching this round, but that is just leaving him open to the straight right, which Ouma lands square thirty seconds in.. Cuevas just does not look good, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this fight wasn’t stopped soon, he’s getting hit with everything Ouma throws and his punches, especially his hooks, are extremely slow. Ouma hasn’t gone for a KO yet, instead just exploiting Cuevas’ openings and landing his straight right hands. Every time Cuevas lands a punch, he leaves himself open for one, and Ouma cap! italizes by landing his straight right. That straight right is an extreme problem maker for Cuevas.

Round: Ouma 10-9 Fight: Ouma 30-25

Round four: Ouma comes out firing, throwing an overhand right followed by a left uppercut, with the uppercut landing. Cuevas lands a nice overhand right, but Ouma comes back jabbing and pins Cuevas on the ropes where he scores his second knockdown after throwing a flurry of punches. Cuevas gets up and tries to scrap on the inside, but Ouma unleashes a right hook that sends Cuevas staggering to the ropes. Cuevas has a bad cut one his left eye, and is really overmatched. Ouma traps him on the rope! s again with 10 seconds left and lands two jabs and a straight to Cuevas’ chin. Hopefully, for Cuevas’ safety, the fight is stopped soon. That’s it, the fight is stopped.

Round: Ouma 10-8 Fight: Ouma 40-33

Kassim Ouma has shown that the loss to Karmazin hasn’t reduced his abilities or killer instinct and sees his record to 22-2-1 (14). The twenty six year old will now campaign for a rematch against Roman Karmazin. The thirty six year old Cuevas returns to the drawing board after suffering the first non-cut related stoppage of his career and falls to 25-8-1 (17).
