WBC Light Welter Champion Floyd Mayweather proved he could compete at welterweight tonight as the top pound for pound fighter in the world thoroughly controlled former WBA 140 lb titlist Sharmba Mitchell at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. Mitchell was hardly ever a participant in the contest, getting beaten to the punch repeatedly by the razor sharp Mayweather. By the third, Mitchell was on the canvas from a searing right hand but beat the count. The veteran from Washington, DC did catch Mayweather on the way in at times but never was able to put the younger man off. "Pretty Boy" steadily wore Mitchell down as the rounds went on until a spearing right hand to the ribs caused the tiring southpaw to take a knee in the sixth. Mitchell beat the count but couldn't give the referee cause to let the contest continue and the action was stopped at 2:05 of the round. Speculation abounds now as to whether or not Floyd Mayweather, now 35-0 (24), will return to the light welter division or continue at 147 lbs where another former light welter, Zab Judah holds three of the four major world titles. It's another high profile loss for Sharmba Mitchell, knocked out by Kostya Tszyu a year ago, and it's open to question if the thirty five year old can still compete at the highest levels of the game.
