Boxing Preview: Graham Earl - Yuri Romanov

By Don Caputo January 24th, 2006 All Boxing Previews

Fighting For The Brits!

When Graham Earl, gloved up and ready to throw down, stares into the glaring eyes of his opponent this Friday on a Maloney Promotions bill at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, a broiling national pride warming the pit of his belly is guaranteed to reach boiling point and take the British and Commonwealth
lightweight champion to a place he has never been before.

From Belarus, he takes on the WBC rated and extremely dangerous Yuri Romanov. Boasting a perfect record on British soil, the European danger-man has thrice traveled to our windy shores to do battle with the local talent.

Ominously if you are a member of the Earl camp, each visit has seen him return home with an extra digit in his W column accompanied by a triumphant glee. It appears that the jeers, the boos, and the unfamiliar surroundings do little to faze this powerhouse of a fighter.

"He already has the scalps of Bobby Vanzie and Steve Murray sitting on his mantelpiece but he is not going to get mine because if he does then he will be entitled to drape the Union Jack over his mantelpiece as well and claim that he owns our lightweight division," said a defiant Earl from his training camp.

With horizons that have always stretched far beyond the jagged cliffs of his homeland, Earl feels that now is the time to make the logical yet uncertain leap into world class. Having established himself as the premier domestic force over the last couple of years, he is leaving the safety of his pond to see if he can make a significant splash in boxing’s deep and often perilous ocean waters – where the real treasure is found.

Whether or not he can make enough ripples against Romanov remains to be seen. What we can be sure of, however, is that Earl will give it everything he's got…and then a little bit more. After all, he’s fighting for Britain.
