On the back of two well attended and highly entertaining shows Stoke-on-Trent boxing promoters, Impact Boxing, will host their next event at The Kings Hall, Stoke on 6th May 2006.
Stoke Lightweight Scott Lawton will again top the bill when he defends his Midlands Area Title against Coventry’s Baz Carey. Impact’s management team see Carey, a former opponent of
Amir Khan, as a step towards making Lawton a serious challenger for the British title. Mick Carney of Impact Boxing said:
“Scott’s now served his apprenticeship and its time to step things up. There is no one in the Lightweight division at present that we consider as a threat. Yes, there are some good boxers in the division but we believe that Scott would be a match for any of them.”
On potential future opponents for Lawton, Carney went on to say:
“We are looking at a number of options; the aim is to get Scott a title bout in the foreseeable future. I don’t want to mention any names at the moment but everybody knows who the main contenders are already and we wouldn’t rule any of them out.”
He added:
“We have already had approaches from certain quarters but cannot disclose any details yet. You will just have to watch this space.”
Turning to the 6th May event Carney confirmed that matches have already been made for Danny Johnson, Chris Edwards and Mick Abbott. Johnson will face Bradford debutant Derek Greave; Edwards is matched against Gary Shields and Abbott currently has two prospective opponents. Crewe Light-Welterweight Ian Clyde will make his debut on the card. Matches have yet to be made for Jimmy “The Whirlwind’ Doherty and Gary Reid.
Mick Carney also hinted that there would be major announcements shortly regarding the future direction of Impact Boxing but wouldn’t be drawn on any detail.
