Boxing Weigh-in: Enrique Gutierrez - Terry Wright

The official weigh-in was held yesterday for tonight's Thompson Boxing "Path to Glory" fight card at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. All fighters looked fit and prepared, with only one contestant, Juan Pablo Montes de Oca, failing to make the contracted weight of 145 pounds. Montes de Oca elected to pay a fine and weighed in two pounds heavier than the contracted weight.

The main event features Enrique Gutierrez, 8-0 (7), from Santa Rosa, California who is fighting Terry Wright, 5-6-1 (4), in a junior middleweight bout. Both appeared confident. In 2001 and 2002, Gutierrez was National Golden Gloves champion and one of the top rated amateurs in the country with over 96 amateur fights to his credit.

The contest is scheduled for six rounds and according to Gutierrez's manager, the junior middle could use some rounds as none of his previous fights have lasted four rounds. Gutierrez is in great condition and spars twelve rounds in the gymnasium.

Added to the sold out card is super-flyweight Manuel "El Termito" Roman. 18 year old Roman brings his unblemished 6-0-1 record with 5 KO's into the ring with him as he fights Jose Luis Cardenas in a four round bout. But Cardenas of Mexico City is no slouch, having posted a knockout victory over contender Sergio Espinosa.

Also on the card is once beaten Gustavo Torrales of Pomona, CA. Weighing in at 142 pounds, Torrales, 4-1 (2) , battles the overweight, 147 pound Juan Pablo Montes de Oca, 6-9 (3) in a 145 pound match.

Torrales has been fighting for two years and has been under the management of legendary Ralph Rivera for about nine months after an amateur career of fourteen fights. Torrales and Rivera are not looking beyond tomorrow night, but would very much like to remove the one blemish on the fighter's career, a split decision loss to Ramon Torres in a crowd pleasing fight at Morongo Casino about six months ago. Torrales feels he won that fight, but also feels he would prevail in a rematch.
