Poore Headlines Peltz Boxing Show In Philly June 16

By Boxing Press May 11th, 2006 All Boxing Articles, Press Releases

Big John Poore, of Boothwyn, PA, goes for his 18th victory in 19 pro fights when he boxes Demetrice King, of Flint, MI, in the scheduled eight-round heavyweight semifinal Friday evening, June 16, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. First of seven fights at 7.30 p.m. CN8 will televise the Poore-King fight as well as the 12-round USBA featherweight championship between Rogers Mtagwa, of Philadelphia, PA and Art Simonyan, of Los Angeles, CA, on a delayed basis (June 24, 7.30 pm) to more than seven million homes from Maine to Maryland.

Poore, 35, has a 17-1 record with 17 knockouts. In his last fight Dec. 16 at the New Alhambra, he K0d Chris Riley, of Chicago, IL, in four rounds. That was Poore’s only outing since he was stopped in five rounds by veteran Robert Hawkins on March 25, 2005, at the Wachovia Spectrum.

A broken left hand suffered against Riley has kept Poore out of action. Poore’s biggest wins have come against Joe Lenhart and Will Perryman. King, a hard-luck heavyweight with a deceiving 9-13 record, 7 K0s, has boxed some of the toughest heavyweight prospects in the country. Seven of his opponents were unbeaten when he boxed them and the overall record of his 22 foes is an incredible 209-54-12. Only two had losing records and three were making their pro debut (in King’s first four fights).

He lost decisions to Olympian Jason Estrada and to Philadelphia’s Chazz Witherspoon and only heavyweight contender Shannon Briggs has been able to stop King.

Tickets priced at $35, $45, $50 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc. (215-765-0922) and Joe Hand Promotions (215-364-9000).
