Boxing In Britain: Duracell Daws Ever Ready

By Boxing Press May 12th, 2006 All Press Releases

There are Twenty Four rounds of Championship boxing scheduled for Hennessy Sports’ vacant British Title double header at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday night. If necessary, Lenny Daws is prepared to go the full twelve in his clash with Nigel Wright at light welterweight. "I have trained to go the distance," said the 27-year-old from Morden. "I can handle it no problem; I could do it in my sleep! I don’t expect a 12 round fight, but if he can live with the pressure I am going to put on him there is no chance of me running out of steam. I will keep up the same pace throughout."

Daws is already renowned for his non-stop, high octane engine, despite never having gone the Championship distance. He slotted it into gear back in January when he earned this opportunity by stopping Colin Lynes in nine. He was only just starting to get warmed up.

"When he quit, I was about to go again, to up my workrate; there was plenty left in the tank," he added. "I had worked hard in the opening few rounds and then taken a bit of a breather, so was ready to step on the gas, but he didn’t come out for the tenth. I think he knew he wasn’t going to be able to close the gap on the scorecards."

Victory over Wright will see the local favourite – who will again be roared on by the “Morden Massive’ – claim a second successive impressive scalp. Long may it continue.

"I want to beat the best in my division," Daws, who holds an amateur win over Wright, continued. "I think of late I have made that step up and proved that I can compete with the best of them. I’m not looking beyond Wright whatsoever, he is a good, good fighter, but I think I can get past him and win that British title. Then I would love to win it outright, but I hope there will be enough people around to challenge me for it."

Daws looked in the best condition of his career at today’s weigh-in for “TWENTY:FOUR,’ scaling comfortably inside the 10 stone limit at 9 stone 12lb 4oz. Wright, from Hartlepool, registered 9 stone 13lb 12oz.

Lee Meager and Dave Stewart also both made the weight, ahead of their clash for the British lightweight title. Meager came in at 9 stone 8lb 5oz, whilst Stewart came in bang on the limit of 9 stone 9lb.

Other Hennessy Sports team members appearing on “TWENTY:FOUR’ are former amateur sensations Darren Barker and John O’Donnell. 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Barker takes on Danny Thornton at Light Middleweight, whilst Junior Olympic Gold medallist O’Donnell takes on Duncan Cottier at welterweight. Both fights are over 8 rounds.

Norwich heavyweight prospect Sam Sexton also appears on the undercard. He has outstanding amateur form of his own. As a junior in the vest Sexton won an ABA Youth title, a Four-Nations gold and a Multi-Nations gold. This will be his third professional fight.
