Rogers Mtagwa, of South Philadelphia, will make the second defense of his United States Boxing Association (USBA) featherweight title when he faces challenger Alvin Brown, of Kansas City, MO, in a scheduled 12-round contest Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. ESPN 2 will televise the Mtagwa-Brown fight as well as two other matches beginning at 9pm est. First of seven fights begins at 7.30 pm.
Mtagwa’s second defense of his 126-pound belt comes less than seven weeks after his first defense, a sensational fourth-round knockout over Artyom Simonyan, of Glendale, CA, on June 16, also at the New Alhambra. A pro since 1997, Mtagwa won the vacant USBA title July 8, 2005, with a come-from-behind 10th-round knockout over Joe Morales, of San Antonio, TX, at the Greater New Haven (CT) Athletic Center.
That victory landed Mtagwa a fight with Orlando Salido, of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, for the No. 1 spot in the world rankings. Unfortunately, a rib injury sustained in the first round against Salido last March 18 forced Mtagwa to retire in his corner after five rounds of their fight in Evansville, IN.
Mtagwa, rated No. 13 by the IBF prior to beating Simonyan, has a 20-10-2 record, 15 K0s. He also has beaten Fernando Trejo, of Mexico.
Brown, 36, has a 26-8 record, 12 K0s. He has won his last three and he avenged one of his defeats in that streak by gaining a 12-round decision over Angel Luis Torres, of Lakewood, WA, for the North American Boxing Assoiation (NABA) featherweight title.
A pro since 1997, Brown also has beaten Edel Ruiz, of Mexico.
