Boxing Info: Amir Khan - Craig Watson… NOT YET

By Boxing Press July 12th, 2006 All Press Releases

Yesterday in London boxing golden boy Amir Khan claimed the British fighter he most wants is Manchester's Craig Watson.

Frank Warren, Amir Khan's promoter, contacted Craig Watson's promoter Frank Maloney and offered him the fight sometime last week. Frank Warren was informed that Craig Watson has had some personal problems and has been out of the gym since his last fight in November 2005, where he had built up a five fight winning record, or else he would he would have been on the Haye undercard in Manchester on the 21st July.

We would be happy to make the fight at a later date. Sports Network matchmaker Dean Powell also contacted Frank Maloney on Monday night and he was told that Watson would not be ready for the September clash and would need a couple of warm up fights first.

Maloney also believes the fight is a much bigger fight than a six rounder, maybe it should be Khans first ten rounder or for the English title.

Craig Watson will be back in action in September, Maloney is looking to give him two or three fights before Christmas and then would hope to set up the Khan match with both fighters on a winning run.

"It would be unfair to make the fight for September due to Watson's inactivity plus as a manager I would like to do my job properly and make sure the playing fields are even.

"I do believe this is a fight the public would like to see, and Watson must be eating into Khan's heart because of his comments yesterday, maybe every time he looks in the mirror in the morning he sees Craig Watson's face staring back at him.

"I know Amir Khan is an ambitious individual but he must understand that now he is a professional he has to be a bit more patient. When the terms are right and Watson is 100% ready the fight will happen.

"I will continue talking to Khan's promoter Frank Warren and I am sure somewhere down the road we will get this fight on."

Watson quoted "At least professional referee's know how to count to ten, the only way Khan can win this is if we have the reincarnation of the referee from the long count from Dempsey and Tunney or they may import the referee from the Tyson and Douglas fight.

"Once I hit him it will "Amir formality". Elementary dear Mr. Watson??
