Spurred on by a listless, weight drained Fernando Vargas, Shane Mosely finally regained the confidence taken away by a spearing Vernon Forrest body shot four years ago and put on a riveting two fisted performance to stop "El Feroz" in the sixth round of their non-title light middleweight contest last night from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Before the bout ex-two time world champion Vargas, 26-4 (22), had announced that this would be his last bout at 154lbs and it was readily apparent that he had very little snap to his punches, showing far less activity than he had in his first fight with Mosley just five months before.
But Mosley, 43-4 (37), must be credited as having something to do with Vargas' inability to engage as well as the former lightweight, welter and light middle world champion turned back the clock to unleash the type of vintage "power boxing" performance that saw him to victory in his first 38 bouts.
Where Vargas can go from here is anyone's guess but if he is to campaign further in the sport it's clear his future lies at middleweight while Mosley intends to drop back down to welterweight where big matches with such luminaries as Antonio Margarito, Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton may await.
