Tonight at the Mountaineer Racetrack in Chester, West Virginia, lightweights Edner Cherry and Daniel Alicea are set to headline a good ESPN2 Friday Night Fights card as they clash over the vacant NABF Lightweight crown. The bill also includes IBA Super Feather kingpin Monty Meza Clay squaring off with southpaw spoiler Dean White as well as the red hot heavyweight prospect Brian Minto going head to head with Andy “Sandman” Sample.
In the main event, twenty four year old Cherry, 20-4-2 (9), will have youth on his side and has gone the distance in competitive loses to Jose Armando Santa Cruz and Ricky Quiles. Nine years Cherry’s senior, Alicea, 30-5-2 (22), is a former NABF Champion but has been blown out quickly whenever stepping up to world class against the likes of Naseem Hamed, Acelino Freitas and Nate Campbell.
But Alicea is riding a three fight win streak and will bring a lot of punching power to the table. Cherry, who has never been stopped, will need to be at his best to neutralize his dangerous opponent if he is to continue on his drive towards a world title opportunity.
