Promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions, World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez (40-3, 29 KOs) and World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (33-4, 28 KOs) square off on Mexican Independence Day on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Vazquez, who became the 100th Mexican champion with his first world title on March 25, 2004, is the Ring Magazine champion and also hailed by his countrymen as the heir apparent to the popularity throne of Marco Antonio Barrera.
The following are quotes from Vazquez from Wednesday’s national conference call:
“I want to prove I’m the best 122-pounder in the world.”
“It’s (fighting Jhonny Gonzalez) a challenge, but I want to fight the best.”
“Jhonny’s the best at 118 (pounds), but now he comes up to my weight and it’s a little different here.”
“But what it comes down to is who does his job in the ring.”
“The Mexican market may have forgotten me a little bit since I live in California, even though I’m from Mexico City. Since Jhonny is the best fighter at his weight in Mexico, I have something to prove and to gain when I beat him.”
