Stoke City were bundled out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle by the ten men of lowly Darlington but the attending 3500 faithful fans were given something to cheer at half time when they were introduced to English Lightweight Champion, Scott Lawton and Welsh ABA Champion, Aaron Thomas. |
Lawton is a firm favourite with many City fans some of who regularly attend the Impact Boxing’s Kings Hall shows. Scott has always had a good support base in the Potteries but since his victory over Stefy Bull in June to clinch the vacant English belt he has seen his profile raised considerably; he is to be honoured by the mayor of Stoke shortly who will host a reception to recognise Scott’s achievement.
As expected, Aaron Thomas also received a warm reception. As the son of the legendry former City player, Mickey Thomas, and an avid fan, Aaron has spent a lot of time at the Britannia stadium as a spectator so it was a particular thrill for him to take part in a Q&A session on the pitch. Aaron expects a huge contingent of City fans to cheer him on when he makes his pro debut on 30th September at the Kings Hall.
Afterwards Scott Lawton said: “It’s a shame about the result tonight, I hate losing so I have some idea how the players must be feeling. Steve Buxton and everyone else here at Stoke City have treated us extremely well and made us feel very welcome. I would like to thank them for giving us this opportunity to publicise our show on the 30th, I hope a lot of City fans will come and cheer me and the other lads on then.”
Aaron Thomas added: “Its because of my family’s long association with the city of Stoke and with Stoke City F.C. in particular that I wanted to make my debut here. I know a lot of City fans and know that they will be at the Kings Hall to support me, I hope that I can give them plenty to cheer and, if all goes well, I hope to fight in Stoke on a regular basis.”
Scott Lawton and Aaron Thomas are both scheduled to fight on Impact Boxing’s 30th September bill at the Kings Hall, Stoke. Tickets are available by calling the ticket-line on: 0845 156 7168
