Boxing Preview Analysis: Carlos Maussa - Manuel Garnica

By Lee Bellfield August 25th, 2006 All Boxing Previews

In his first outing since losing his WBA 140 pound crown to Ricky Hatton, Columbian brawler Carlos Maussa attempts to get back to winning ways in Miami against Mexican Manuel Garnica. The 34 year old Maussa shocked the boxing world last June when he KO'd defending champion Vivian Harris to take the WBA 140 pound title in Atlantic City on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's title winning effort against Arturo Gatti.

Five months later in November, "The Apostle" traveled to Sheffield, England to face the division's number one, Ricky Hatton, for the IBF version.

A shock almost ensued when Maussa cut the Hitman in the first round. However the ever resourceful Hatton overcame this setback to grind down the Columbian before knocking him out with a peach of a left hook in round nine.

Losing to the number one is no disgrace to Maussa and he can still be a major player in the division if he can come through this comeback bout.

The lightly regarded (in world terms) WBC Latino Light Welterweight Championship is on the line this time. Maussa's opponent is little known Mexican Manuel Garnica. A look at Garnica's record suggests that his five defeats have come against little known opponents, although he does have a notable win on his record back in 1999 against veteran Gabriel Ruelas, in a 10 round decision.

That being said, I can only see one winner. Even against the division's number one man, Maussa was a tricky customer and with a reach of six inches more than his foe and with a style that looks awkward but very effective, I think Carlos Maussa will bludgeon his way to a late rounds stoppage win to once again become a force in the 140 pound division.
