Promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions, undefeated former world champion Joan Guzman and World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez held an open media workout from the Oscar de la Hoya Youth Center in Los Angeles Thursday.
Guzman challenges current WBO 130-pound champion Jorge Barrios Sept. 16 at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View while Vazquez and World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez square off.
The following are quotes from Guzman and Vazquez following their workout:
Guzman
“I am training to go 12 rounds. If Barrios thinks he’s going to knock me out in the fourth like he predicted, he’s got another thing coming. He’s never going to see my head I’ll be moving so fast around him.”
“Where I’m from, the Dominican Republic, is known for making great baseball players. But I’m going to show that we have some great boxers there too.”
Vazquez
“I feel really good, really motivated right now. I’m just concentrating on the fight and relaxing. On Sept. 16, I’ll be focused, relaxed, well-rested and ready to go.”
“My training is going really well. I’m in peak physical condition and hitting harder.”
“I really want to win this fight for my family and for Mexico. This will be a defining fight for me. When I beat Gonzalez, I’m looking at Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barerra in the future.
“It’s going to be a tough fight but I’m prepared for whatever comes. I’m confident that my training will get me the win.”
“I want to thank Sycuan Ringside Promotions for helping me get to this point in my career. I am very thankful for this opportunity.”
