Guerrero Takes IBF Feather Belt From Aiken On Undercard
James Toney's improbable run at heavyweight finally ran out of steam tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA as Samuel Peter successfully leveraged his strength and youth advantages to win a WBC Title Eliminator on scores of 116-111, 115-112 for Peter and 116-111 for Toney. It was a close contest all the way as the 38 year old ex-middleweight stung the much larger Peter with crisp combinations as expected but the vaunted defensive shield of Toney was breached more than a few times by the massive power punches of the native Nigerian.
It was back and forth action for most of the rounds, providing a very difficult contest to score but when the dust finally settled it was Peter, 27-1 (22), who swayed two of the three judges in his favor to secure the victory. Toney, 69-5-3 (43), put on a very good performance in a close loss that could have gone either way and is still very much in the heavyweight picture.
Also on the Goosen-Tutor promotion, Robert Guerrero, 19-1-1 (12), took the IBF Featherweight title from Eric Aiken, 16-5 (12), during a brutally one sided contest that saw Aiken's corner decline to send their man out for more punishment in the eighth round.
