With a modest record and an unassuming style, Berry "Killa Bee" Butler goes into the lion's den tonight against undefeated Corey Cummings. The fight takes place Thursday in Woodlawn, Maryland at Martin's West (410) 375-9175. The pressure is all on Cummings and his inexperienced and untested record of 15-0. This is purportedly his first main event and includes the added weight of fighting in front of his hometown crowd. Berry Butler is a 35 year old veteran ranked in the top 20 by several boxing organizations. A product of the Phillis Wheatley Center in Greenville, South Carolina, Butler has traveled the world fighting all comers. He has fought world class competition such as Antonio Tarver and sparred with European World Champions Markus Beyer and Sven Ottke, to name a few. A lesson in persistance, Berry has reeled off 8 wins in a row all by KO and has raised his record from 12-12 to 20-12 against fighters with very good records. While he has lacked strong support in his home state of South Carolina, his many travels may be partially to blame for that. Just taking this fight is a bold move for the low-key family man Butler, whose calm and reserved manner make for a very likable guy. I look forward to seeing him achieve his rightful place amongst the elite fighters in the Light Heavyweight division and maybe after this fight he can finally start reaping the rewards for all his years of service to professional boxing.
