Hot middleweight prospect John Duddy's train almost came off the rails last night when the popular Irish fighter stepped up to face ex-IBF Light Middleweight Champion Yory Boy Campas at Madison Square Garden in New York last night. 35 year old Campas, a battle scarred veteran from Navajoa, Mexico, is nowhere near the fighter he was during his title reign of 1997-8 but one thing Yory Boy can still do is punch. Something Duddy found out in the second round when Campas nearly knocked the undefeated sensation out and cut him above both eyes.
Duddy soon began to box the heavy handed veteran but was still on the losing end for the most part until Camps began to run out of steam and was shaken by a perfect right hand from Duddy in the eighth. The Irishman continued his attacks for the rest of the bout until the twelfth and final frame when Campas roared back to life and clearly had Duddy in trouble.
The bout went the distance with John Duddy improving to 18-0 (15) via scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. Yory Boy Campas, who performed much better than the scores would indicate, drops to 88-9 (72).
