Potential Boxing Showdown: Sergiy Dzinziruk vs. Wayne Alexander

By Ricky Jones October 24th, 2006 All Boxing Articles

WBO Light Middle Champ Victorious Saturday, May Face Wayne Alexander Next

Sergiy "Razor" Dzinziruk disposed of Russian opponent Alisultan Nadirbegov last Saturday at the Brandeberge Arena in Halle, Germany via a wide points decision in what amounted to little more than a tune up fight but the German based Ukrainian WBO Champion will certainly have more of a contest on his hands when he could face mandatory challenger Wayne Alexander in his next bout.

Dzinziruk, 33-0 (21), seemed to have come out of nowhere in December of last year when he took away the WBO belt from Daniel Santos by unanimous decision but the 30 year old southpaw had already won and defended the European title twice by that time.

While Dzinziruk has faced good European level opposition in addition to Santos and the Argentine battler Sebastian Lujan, the WBO Champion may face his most difficult challenge to date if he is to meet Wayne Alexander, 24-2 (18), of London, England.

The 33 year old Briton is a past European and British Champion while losing to the WBO titlist of the time, Harry Simon, in 2001 after taking the bout as a replacement opponent on less than a day's notice.

Most recently Alexander defended his WBU belt with a hard fought split decision over previously unbeaten crafty southpaw, Thomas McDonagh, this past March.

As evidence by his one punch destruction of Takaloo two years ago to win the WBU title, Alexander can really whack and if he should get the chance to face Dzinziruk for the WBO trophy, an all out war can be expected as each man will undoubtedly strive to find the chin of the other first.

Will Sergiy Dzinziruk face Wayne Alexander in the ring? It's to early to tell but if the champion's backers are unable to arrange unification showdowns with other world titlists on the light middleweight division, Wayne Alexander may get another crack at genuine world honors.
