Boxing Info: James “Buddy” McGirt

By Boxing Press October 27th, 2006 All Press Releases

This Saturday (October 28), trainer James "Buddy" McGirt returns to the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, for the first time since May 18, 2002, when he worked the corner of Arturo "Thunder" Gatti in his epic slug-fest with "Irish" Micky Ward. Believed by many to have been one of the greatest fights of all time, the brutal ten-round affair was the first of three memorable bouts between the two warriors. "It'll be great being back at Mohegan Sun Casino," McGirt states. "The fans there are great there, and it's a great casino! It's always exciting working a corner, but that fight started a great trilogy."

McGirt, a former world champion at junior-welterweight and welterweight, will be working the corner of his young undefeated featherweight prospect, Dat "Dat Be Dat" Nguyen. Nguyen, who was born in Vietnam and grew up in Hawaii, is off to a 4-0 start as a professional, with two of those wins coming via knockout. McGirt has been training Nguyen, in Vero Beach, for just over 7-months, and really likes what he sees in his protege, thus far.

"He has a lot of talent. The young man can fight!" As for Nguyen's potential in the pro-ranks, McGirt believes the sky is the limit. "If he keeps his head in the game, and his eye on the prize, he can do great things!" Nguyen recently signed on with Rich Cappiello's Cappiello Promotions, who is promoting Saturday's card. Some of the evening's bouts, including the USBA junior-featherweight title bout between Mike Oliver and Adam Carrera, will be televised on Saturday, November 11, on Fox Sports New England. FSNE can be viewed nation-wide on DirectTV channel 620
