Donoghue, Ginty Advance To Finals At National Stadium

Current AIBA World Junior male and female champions Willie Donoghue and Ciara Ginty advanced to next Friday’s Open Youth Championships finals following semi-final wins at Dublin’s National Stadium today.

Donoghue saw off the challenge of Thomas Mongan and Ginty edged out current European Union junior champion Amy Broadhurst on a split decision in a very tight lightweight decider.

European Youth champion Gary Cully progressed after Brad White was retired injured in the first, and Lauren Hogan earned a split decision over EU Junior champ Grainne Gavin.

Olympic BC stand out Frankie Cleary beat his fellow Galway man Francis Barrett, while EU Youth champion Kristina O’Hara and Cheyanne O’Neill also advanced at the South Circular Road venue.

The IABA are using the Open Youth Championships as part of their selection process for the AIBA World Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Bulgaria in April. The World Youths will act as the only qualifier for the Olympic Youth Games in China in August.
