Belarus lightweight Yuri Romanov has built a career on upsetting favorites since turning pro four years ago and the twenty four year old spoiler did it again last night in Ciudad Real, Spain. Reigning European Champion Juan Carlos Melero was in the process of giving Romanov a boxing lesson and had canvassed the tourist in the third round. When the Spaniard went into close the show, Romanov unleashed a desperate sledgehammer right hand that hurtled the champion unconscious to the floor.
Melero, 31-1 (16), was counted out and Romanov, 18-2 (12), has now firmly erased the January loss suffered to current WBU titlist Graham Earl.
The Belarus slugger may now face top rated challenger Matt Zegan of Poland, who recently lost an IBF eliminator to Nate Campbell, or perhaps a rematch with Graham Earl.
