In a battle of aging former world champions, Manuel Medina grabbed the top spot in the IBF super featherweight rankings with a victory over Kevin Kelley on the Klitschko – Brock undercard last night at Madison Square Garden.
The long limbed, high volume style of 35 year old Medina, 67-15 (31), proved too much for the 39 year old Kelley, 59-8-2 (39), to surmount as the Mexican veteran took a closely contested majority decision 114-114, 115-113 (twice).
The loss is a severe disappointment to former WBC Feather titlist Kelley, who many pronounced finished after a stoppage loss to Erik Morales six years ago, as the New Yorker was coming off a surprising win over ex-IBF Super Feather champ Carlos Hernandez.
Manuel Medina is an amazing story in and of himself and has positioned himself to win a world title for a sixth time if he can overtake newly crowned IBF Champion Malcolm Klassen of South Africa.
