One of boxing's longest reigning champions has done it again as Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, 63-2 (31), defended his WBC Flyweight title last night in Korat, Thailand by outpointing challenger Monelisi Myekeni, 21-3 (8), over twelve rounds.
Myekeni, handled by top South African trainer Nic Durandt, came into the contest as the WBC International beltholder and a winner of 13 of his last 14 bouts but was soon leveled in the very first round by the champion Wongjongkam.
The South African beat the count and managed to finish all twelve rounds but was never able to threaten the Thai, who won by scores of 119-108, 118-110 and 117-111.
Wongjongkam has now won his 53rd consecutive bout and retains the WBC title for the 16th time since winning it in 2001 with a, three knockdown, first round destruction of Malcolm Tunacao.
