The longstanding grudge match between British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch and former British titleholder Tony Dodson was finally settled last night as Froch knocked out his rival in three rounds at the Nottingham Arena on a Hennessy Sports promotion.
The pair had seen three previously scheduled contests called off due to Dodson injuries, over which Froch had developed considerable ire. Despite the high degree of anticipation, the action didn't last very long.
Dodson came hurtling out of the blocks, determined to capitalize of the defensive weakness of the champion as had been previously exposed by opponents Brian Magee, Dale Westerman. But the Scouser couldn't get much offense going and was perhaps discouraged by several counters from Froch.
By the third, the British Champion had done his study on Dodson and launched a well timed combination, right uppercut to the chin followed by a left hook to the ribs, that knocked out the challenger at 2:55 of the round. Carl Froch improves to 20 wins against no losses while Tony Dodson falls to 20-4-1 (12).
Afterward, Froch's promoter Mick Hennessy spoke of wanting to set up a European title fight before going after the WBC title.
