“The Cobra” Strikes Down “The Saint” In Front Of 80,000

Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch retained his IBF and WBA Super-Middleweight Titles decisively last night with an eighth round KO of George ‘The Saint’ Groves in front of a packed 80,000 capacity Wembley Arena.

The Champion soon settled in after a cagey round one for both men but it was a closely fought contest with Groves seemingly waiting to land the perfect shot.

The turning point came in the seventh when Froch was stunned by a left to the head then both boxers find success as Groves is backed up on the ropes at the end of the frame. But the fight ended in round eight with a peach of a shot which sent Groves heavily to the canvas. The fight was stopped immediately as Groves took time to recover.

Also on the Eddie Hearn – Matchroom promoted show, Doncaster’s Jamie McDonnell landed a decent left to the head of Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat of Thailand in the tenth to win the vacant WBA Bantamweight Title.

Londoner – James DeGale scored a fourth round TKO of Brandon Gonzales of Sacramento, USA, in their twelve round Super-Middleweight Contest.

And Kevin Mitchell of Dagenham scored a TKO in the eleventh round of his Lightweight contest against Ghislain Maduma of Canada. But as Mitchell was over-weight at the check-weight, his mandatory challenge against Miguel Vasquez for the IBF Lightweight Title can no longer go ahead.
