Last night on the undercard of Wright - Quartey, former IBF Super Middleweight Champion Jeff Lacy returned to the ring for the first time since taking a sustained one sided beating at the hands of Joe Calzaghe nine months ago, posting a controversial win over ex-European titlist Vitali Tsypko in a rematch.
Lacy started off well, tagging his Ukrainian rival with booming shots but southpaw Tsypko refused to fold and came back with crisp offensive sequences that began to discourage the Floridian. The middle rounds saw both men enjoy moments and the tide of control raged back and forth.
Tsypko nailed Lacy at the end of the eighth, hurting the shorter man, but "Left Hook"
managed to keep his feet and hang on. Lacy picked up the pace in the tenth and final round before winning a shaky majority decision on the scorecards 96-94 (twice) and 95-95.
Lacy, 22-1 (17), clearly is still affected from the Calzaghe loss and must shake the memory of that bad experience if he is to ever regain his former form. Tsypko falls to 17-2(10).
